AGC: Advanced Gas Cleaning of Product Gas for a Greener Energy Production

Dual fluidized bed (DFB) gasification enables the supply of renewable energy from a wide variety of residual materials. The product gas can either be burned directly or converted into a storable energy source (such as synthetic natural gas or Fischer-Tropsch diesel). One aspect that has been little investigated at present is product gas cleaning, which is moving further into focus with the increasing use of residual materials and the resulting increase in impurity concentrations in the gas. These impurities have to be separated to process-specific limit values before further use. In the course of this dissertation project, a holistic view of product gas cleaning and its optimization is to be carried out. To this end, the existing gas cleaning chain at Syngas Platform Vienna and alternative gas cleaning concepts will be investigated and their potential evaluated. For selected gas cleaning technologies, a further focus will be placed on the long-term behavior in order to investigate deactivation effects and the accumulation of impurities. Particular attention is paid to tar content, as an alternative gas cleaning concept based on temperature swing adsorption (TSA) was recently installed at the site. Furthermore, a techno-economic analysis of gas cleaning concepts will be carried out to calculate the influence of gas cleaning on CAPEX, OPEX, sales price and revenues on the production of energy based on DFB gasification.

Aims:

  • Investigation of the existing gas cleaning systems of Syngas Platform Vienna with focus on tar separation
    • Optimization of RME scrubbers and RME consumption
    • Tests on the long-term stability of the existing gas cleaning concepts
  • Potential survey of alternative gas cleaning concepts
  • Investigation of alternative gas cleaning concepts with a focus on tar separation
    • Determination of the separation of impurities from product gas in a temperature swing adsorption (TSA) plant on a laboratory scale
    • Investigation of the long-term behavior of a TSA system on a laboratory scale
  • Scale-up for the integration of alternative gas cleaning concepts into the Syngas Platform Vienna
  • Techno-economic consideration of alternative gas cleaning concepts
